In a Nutshell

At an early age, David Michael Bernstein was drawn to music. Inspired by his father’s musical talents, David began writing his own music. His formative years were also marked by Jewish learning studies and a pursuit toward a higher purpose. The rock and roll life called, though, and he toured the night clubs and bars in New York and New Jersey, and numerous other locations around the country, even opening for groups such as Black Sabbath. As time went on, he decided to have more long-term career goals, and so, became a Doctor of Chiropractic in 1978.

Music never left David’s soul, though, and neither did his pursuit of contentment. Many of his Christian patients attempted to witness to him, giving him tracts and Bibles – of which took up forgotten space on his shelves. Finally, one patient got him to ask God Himself if Jesus is the Messiah. What followed after many months of praying was true understanding of salvation. On Rosh Hashanah, 1989, David Michael Bernstein gave his life to Yeshua (the Hebrew name for Jesus). As a result of his salvation, his wife, Linda, who was raised in the church, rededicated her life to Yeshua.

Now, David Michael Bernstein’s musical gifts are being used for the Lord. He’s been a featured guest on numerous Christian TV and radio talk shows. He is a lecturer and praise and worship leader.  He is an experienced singer, musician and songwriter with hundreds of songs to his credit.  His most recent CDs are titled One Day At A Time and The Way Back Home – of which you can purchase here.

The Full Story

David Michael Bernstein was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey.  He is the son of Louis and Irene Bernstein.  His father was born in the town of Ustilug, located in the Ukraine.  He learned to play the piano on the very instrument that belonged to the famous composer, conductor and pianist, Igor Stravinsky. His father’s father, Isaac Bernstein, taught Igor how to play the violin and when Igor moved to the United States, he gave him the piano out of gratitude.  David grew up listening to his father playing the piano and writing songs, and it inspired him to write his own songs starting at an early age.

David’s mother kept a kosher home in his early years, and she was faithful to light the Sabbath candles every Friday night.  He was raised in an orthodox temple and went to Hebrew school in order to prepare for his bar mitzvah and to learn about the biblical history and culture of the Jewish people.  He learned how to read Hebrew, but there was very little focus placed on translation.  Therefore, even though he could read the words, he did not fully understand their meaning.  After he had his bar mitzvah, he attempted to obey the commandments of a Jewish man and to pray daily and put on tfillin (worn by observant adult Jews during their morning weekday prayers), but after a while, he lost interest.  The call of the world got the best of him.  He and his brother and their friend who lived upstairs started taking guitar lessons.  The excitement of playing rock music drew him into various bands, especially when the British invasion hit our shores.  He played at a lot of different nightclubs in the late 1960s, especially in Greenwich Village when it was in its heyday.

He went to Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, New Jersey where he majored in biology.  While he was in college he was performing with his group at bars and concerts, and they opened for some well-known acts, such as Black Sabbath.  After he graduated, he toured on the road for a few years to pursue his dream of being a R&R star.  But that wasn’t God’s plan for his life.  He had a recurring dream that he was 40 years old and he was still playing in local bars.  He decided to quit the band while they were playing in Boston, and he was going to enroll in Berkeley School of Music.  However, in the meantime, he became friends with a chiropractor and he was so impressed with how much his patients enjoyed going to his office, plus the fact that he had a very positive experience when a chiropractor treated him for an injury he sustained when he was on the high school wrestling team, he decided to try his hand at chiropractic.

He enrolled in New York Chiropractic College where he became a member of the Phi Chi Omega Scholastic Honor Society.  Upon graduating in 1978 as a Doctor of Chiropractic, he sold his few material possessions and immediately headed south to Florida to start a practice.  He never gave up on his musical talents; in fact, he used them to win a talent contest in order to get the money needed to pay for his chiropractic license.

Many of his colleagues in the field of alternative medicine were heavily involved in New Age philosophy, particularly the human potential movement.  He pursued numerous such courses, thinking that was the way to happiness and success.  Then God started sending him lots of Christian patients.  Many of them witnessed to him and gave him tracts and Bibles.  He politely thanked them and stored the Christian literature on his shelf, thinking to himself, "I'm Jewish and we don’t believe in Jesus."  One time, one of his patients came in for an office visit and she asked him what he thought was an off-the-wall question.  She said, “Do you know that Jesus is the Son of God?”  He replied, “I am the son of God, too.”  She said, “He is the only begotten Son of God.”  He didn’t know what that meant.  Then she asked if he believed in God and he said yes.  She stated, “Since you believe in God, why don’t you pray to Him to reveal to you if Jesus is the Messiah?”  He liked the way she put that, and so he accepted the challenge.  He prayed every night for several months and he got no answer.  One night he was particularly troubled and he prayed as usual before he went to bed.  The next morning, just as he woke up, he heard a man’s voice in the room.  When he looked around, the only person he saw in the room was his wife, and she was sound asleep; furthermore, she does not have a man’s voice.  The voice said one word, “Leviticus.”  The only thing he knew about Leviticus was that it was a book in the Bible.  He searched through the book and he saw lots of priestly rituals in order to atone for sin.  Finally, he said, “God, if that’s you speaking to me, You are going to have to do better than that because I don’t get it!”  Then he felt a prompting to read another version of the Bible that was given to him by a woman and her daughter who were former patients.  He read in the introductory section to Leviticus that if you believe Jesus died for your sins, you no longer have to go through these priestly rituals to be forgiven of your sins.  That’s when the lights went on.  His sacrifice meant forgiveness.  His death meant eternal life.  On Rosh Hashanah, 1989, David Michael Bernstein gave his life to Yeshua (the Hebrew name for Jesus).  Yeshua means salvation.  He became Lord and Savior of his life.  As a result of his salvation, his wife, Linda, who was raised in the church, rededicated her life to Yeshua.
